About Us

First Hour Grief Response, Inc. primarily helps people who have suffered an unexpected loss. However, we do not turn anyone away that needs help with grief after the death of a loved one. We like to get involved as soon as possible in the “first hours” following the loss. We can help with funeral planning and other difficult decisions that have to be made right away. Most people reach out for help a few weeks after their loss when family and friends go back to their normal lives and they are left to process the grief alone. Grief is such a lonely journey and there are so many emotions to deal with like anger, guilt, regret, depression and even suicidal thoughts.

How do we work? We help hurting people by pairing them up with a grief specialist and providing one to one grief mentoring. The first visit is free. We ask for a $50 donation for each subsequent mentoring session and have scholarship funds available if someone cannot afford to pay the full program fee. We just ask that they pay something toward each visit.

We also have a variety of other programs like art and equine therapy, bible studies, a monthly crafts class and occasional trips to a rage room.

Our current location is a shotgun house in Lyndon with a warm and welcoming environment. We offer each person a prayer shawl (Strands of Hope program) to use to stay close to God and pray through all their emotions. We also offer a journal and a few different books that they may find helpful in further understanding the grief journey. And when we feel they are ready, we will suggest groups for them to attend that are for their specific type loss.

We also check on them regularly and act as a lifeline for those really tough days. Each client has their grief specialists cell number in case they need some extra support. We send them cards via USPS mail on those tough dates to remind them that we care about them and their loved one.
